GNLA chief to contest assembly election

Shillong, Sept 19: Arrested Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion R Sangma will be contesting the upcoming assembly election scheduled early next year.

Sangma family sources informed that the GNLA chief has decided to contest the 2013 elections even as he is under trail for criminal offences.

Despite the charges of criminal offences, the GNLA chief has the sanction of the constitution to contest until the court of law convicts him.

Meantime, Sangma was produced in the camp court in the jail premises for two cases under the Nongstoin police station. The court has again remanded the GNLA chief to 14 days police custody till October 1.

Sangma’s counsel Sujit Dey said, “Two applications have been filed Wednesday, one is to direct the jail authority to allow his defense time for briefing in relation to the above cases and another filed for his bail.”

Dey informed that thought both the applications have been filed but none of the application have been not moved as both have been kept in abeyance under section 437 Cr PC.

Sangma’s wife Enrita N Marak, meanwhile,  has expressed her intention  to file an appeal to the appellate authority against non-supply of information under RTI relating to her husband’s case within the specified time.
