GNLA militant killed

TURA, JAN 16: Police on Saturday raided Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) camp in East Garo Hills, killing one of its top cadres. The cadre identified as Kandem is believed to be associated with Baichung and Heido’s command. “Heido is a bomb expert and probably assembled the Williamnagar IED blast”, said GHP Raju, IG (operations).

Raju informed that Kandem was instrumental in abduction of block development officer of Chokpot Jude Rangku Sangma, who was abducted and released by the outfit in November last year.

Police recovered a SBBL gun, 15 detonators, three gelatin sticks, roll wires, six mobiles and a promotion certificate of a GNLA cadre.

“Kandem is the main GNLA cadre, whom Haideo have been using to fabricate IEDs and planting them in various parts of Garo hills. The slain cadre was involved in Kherapara IED blast last year in which BSF personnel were hurt”, said Raju.

Kherapara is along Tura – Dalu route of West Garo Hills, which is highly infested by militants. Police also said that Kandem had planted several IEDs last year in Chokpot region of South Garo Hills.

In another significant development, police today arrested Balmepa, a GNLA informer from Sudukgre in East Garo Hills. Police said that Balmepa is working in close association with GNLA commander Jimmy, responsible for Williamnagar IED blast.

“Balmepa befriends with shop owners and passes on the information to Jimmy for extortion and other threats. Balmepa is instrumental in collecting gelatin sticks from mine owners by threating them and passes on the explosives to GNLA commander-in-chief Sohan D. Shira”, said Raju.-From Our Correspondent
