GNLA’s rise worrisome in peaceful Meghalaya

riseSHILLONG, APR 17: Even as Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri said that the law and order situation in the state remains stable for the last one year but she informed that the activities of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants all over Garo hills and certain areas of West Khasi hills and South West Khasi hills bordering East Garo hills and South Garo hills continue to be a serious cause for concern to the state government.

Warjri told the assembly on Wednesday that in the western range of Meghalaya and its adjacent parts of West Khasi hills and South West Khasi hills districts the GNLA with support from Assam based militant groups has become a dangerous force. She said the militant outfit  comprising of large number of cadres that  includes over ground active workers equipped with adequate fire power, organizing capacity and command leadership has pose a serious challenge to the security agencies engaged in anti – militancy operations.

Despite relentless operations, Warjri said the GNLA has expanded very fast in cadre strength, weaponry and geographical reach adding the that the over ground cadres and fund raisers are giving the organization increased capacity to extort money and create mayhem disturbing normal life and development activities in the five districts of Garo hills,South West Khasi hills and West Khasi hills districts.

Warjri, however, assured, “The state police and central forces are carrying out anti-militancy operations throughout Garo hills and West Khasi hills to neutralize the activities of the GNLA.” She also added “We are also trying to neutralize the GNLA over ground workers, fund raisers and sympathizers.”

As per statistics, 165 militancy-related incidents were reported in the state during the year 2012. During the period from March 1, 2013 till date, one case of killing, one case of arson, one case of abduction, two cases of attack on the public, one case of attack on police and four encounters with police were reported in which five GNLA cadres were arrested and two were killed in the retaliatory firing.

Warjri also informed that efforts are being made to improve the intelligence network and enhance the capabilities for launching an effective intelligence based operations which is expected to yield better results in the coming months.- By Our Reporter
