Govt talk to chairman: GNLA

TURA, MAR 18: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) on Wednesday said that the state government can initiate talks with their jailed chairman Champion Sangma, who is lodge in the Shillong District Jail.

In a statement issued by GNLA joint publicity secretary Garo Mandei Marak said, “If government is willing to talk let our chairman do so. Our chairman is accessible 24 hours. It is not necessary that all members from GNLA should talk with the government. Our chairman is our head and he can talk on behalf of the outfit”.

Marak also informed that if the government desires the talk can be initiated in jail itself. “Government can send its representatives to meet our chairman in jail. GNLA constitution empowers its chairman for taking all decision. Any kind of talks has to be in presence of chairman”, he stated.

On the request  to lift indefinite bandh at Ampati constituency, which has been imposed by the outfit, the release said, “We are still examining the statement of Mukul Sangma and need some time to lift the bandh in Ampati”.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma had stated that the outfits needed to shed their anti national stance and cease violent activities for negotiating a dialogue.

The outfit also clarified that they will not be moved by passionate appeals from the government. “We will remain firm with the bandh till chief minister accedes to our demand for giving exemplary punishment to the people responsible for the fake encounter at Oragitok and arranged conspiracy in killing of 5 villagers at Mrigre”, the release said.

The outfit statement further criticized the ‘partial judgment’ of some congregations and Church and felt the same was unbiblical. “There are many pulpits where they might be welcome. We are more universal as we have a place with diverse communities and denominations. Consequently, such move by certain churches is deplorable,” the statement said..

The outfit further expressed its disgust with the CM calling the outfit terrorists even as it alleged that the CM did not want peace in the region. “We are offended at the CM terming us as terrorists. Such a statement is personal and unbecoming of a CM. By his remarks and little talks, it is apparent that he doesn’t need peace to prevail in Garo Hills”, the release added.- From Our Correspondent
