Rs 70 lakhs sanctioned for cyclone victims

cycloneSHILLONG, APR 21: Meghalaya government sanctioned Rs 70 lakhs for the rehabilitation of the cyclone affected families in the four villages of West Khasi hills district. An advance of the sanctioned amount was handed by Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo to the district additional deputy commissioner J Lakiang on Sunday.

The government has sanctioned Rs 25 lakh earlier.

Laloo, who holds the disaster management portfolio, visited the relief camps in four villages along with Meghalaya State Planning Board chairman Salseng C Marak and Mawshynrut legislator Witting Mawsor besides officials from the district on Sunday.

The four villages visited included Banglapluh village, Porla A, Porla B and Mawthylliang village under Mawshynrut constituency.

Over 690 families were rendered homeless in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills districts when a severe cyclone and hailstorm hit several villages last Wednesday and Thursday nights killing three persons.

Reports indicates that many houses were destroyed and about 692 families from 24 villages have been rendered homeless.

Expressing concern over the loss of three lives, Laloo however praised the residents of Banglapluh who despite having lost their houses in the cyclone stayed back to reconstruct instead of going to the relief camps set up by the district administration.

Laloo also assured the people that if needed be the government will sanction more fund to restored normalcy at the earliest. He also informed that he had directed officials from the education department to conduct an inspection of the schools that have been affected and damaged during the cyclone so that the government can sanction funds for its reconstruction and ensure that studies resumes at the earliest.- By Our Reporter
