Govt sets up SLMEC to handle COVID-19 cases

SHILLONG, MAR 28: A state level medical expert committee (SLMEC) has been constituted to provide medical advice and guidance to the state government for handling cases of COVID-19.

A notification issued by the chief secretary MS Rao on Saturday said the SLMEC will be headed by the commissioner & secretary in-charge health & family welfare, Sampath Kumar as chairperson.

Its members include – Dr Andreas  Dkhar,  MD, Senior  Medical  Specialist, Civil Hospital,  Shillong, Dr. S. Hazarika, MD, (Retd) Government Medical  Professional, Dr Michael  Mawlong, MD, Microbiologist, Nazareth  Hospital, Shillong, Dr M. Chengappa, MD, Super Care Hospital, Shillong, Dr Sandra  Albert,  Director, Indian Institute  of Public, Shillong, Dr Vishwajeet Kumar, (John Hopkins)  Public Health Specialist & C.E.O.,  Community Empowerment Lab, Dr Vijay Nongpiur, Nodal Officer, COVID, NEIGRIHMS, Dr Sandi  Syiem,  MD (Psychiatry), Sanker Rehabilitation Centre,  Shillong, Dr N. Wanswett, Director  of Health Services  (Research) and Dr.  A. War,  Director  of Health Services (MI) as Member Secretary.

“The committee shall provide  advice  and  guidance   to  the  Government and  other  medical   practitioners working   in   various   hospitals  in  handling   and treatment  of   COVID-19  infected patients and  to examine and assess  various  lines of treatment  used and recommended by the affected  States  and countries,” Rao said in the notification.

Besides, reviewing various  journals  and publications regarding the clinical  management of COVID  – 19  patients  to recommend key  insights  to the state government and the committee  will  also  advise   the  government  on  any  other   matter   related   to COVID  -19, he said.
