Govt to set up institutions of dance, culture

SHILLONG, JAN 30: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday informed that institutions would be set up to promote and preserve the indigenous dance, music and culture that would cater and nurture the talents of the youth of the state.

Addressing the mammoth gathering at Betasing in South West Garo hill on the second day of the cultural festival, “Rhythm of the Hills” which began here on Wednesday, Sangma said that every block in Meghalaya would have such an institution for excellence in performing arts, indigenous music and dance.

Stating that his government was committed to promote the state as a global tourist hub, Sangma informed that funds have been earmarked for promoting tourism by harnessing the rich culture and tradition of Meghalaya.

On the need to promote and brand Meghalaya as a popular winter destination, Sangma said that the government is working out plan to popularize the state for attracting global tourists and stressed the need to focus on branding and marketing the state as an alternative winter destination in the world.

Encouraging the people to revive their culture, Sangma said, “Tourist from Europe and US would like to visit this part of the world for something different. At all cost, it is our duty to preserve our identity”.

The second day of the festival witnessed competition among various Wangala dance troupes, indigenous sports and indigenous musical instrument, etc, besides display of cultural dances by various communities.- By Our Reporter

    The prettiest part about our Chief Minister is that, he loves to cut inaugural ribbons and laid foundation stone. It is not surprised that Meghalaya is one among the tourist destinations in India so far. But, many outstanding problems thronged to give this state an ugly look. Perhaps, Mr Chief Minister will not turn his back to that. Anyway, let’s watch how he drives the wheel
