Approach election with serious mindset: NPP chief to candidates

SHILLONG, OCT 27: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday asked the candidates of the party to approach the upcoming 2023 Assembly elections with a ‘serious mindset’.

“It is the mindset that is important and I want our candidates to approach the elections with a serious mindset,” Sangma told reporters.

Stating that one cannot take election easy, the NPP chief said, “One cannot take your opponents lightly as every opponent is a serious opponent.”

With that in mind, he said his party is gearing up its preparation for the 2023 polls. “We are doing our best to ensure that we select the right candidates and we are working hard to organize the party. So let’s hope for the best as elections are always tough,” Sangma said.

The chief minister however refused to indicate if the NPP will be fielding candidates from all the 60 seats by saying “we will contest from maximum seats”.

When asked about the criteria for allotting party tickets to aspiring candidates, the NPP chief said, “For us what is important is we look at both party loyalty and the commitment to the party and commitment to the people is something which is very important to us and of course we are looking at winnability. It is a question of mixing and matching both these are our major decision making criteria for us. Apart from that, we look at the overall background of the candidate. We look at the individual objective and how they want to work in the constituency…”
