SHILLONG, MAR 20: The state government will soon convene a tripartite meeting with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and traditional headmen for working out a long term solution into alleged encroachment by MUDA in areas outside municipality.

“The government will again convene a meeting with KHADC and Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep to work out a long term solution,” Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling told the Assembly here on Tuesday.

He was replying to a call attention moved by Congress legislator from Mawlai Process T Sawkmie, who demanded the government to denotify certain areas notified as census town.

These areas include Mawlai, Mawpat, Pynthor, Nongmynsong, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun, Nongkseh, Umpling and Madanrting.

According to Sawkmie, once these areas are denotified they will no longer fall under the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) anymore while pointing out to the various hardships faced by people while construction of new houses.

However, the minister informed that the first meeting convened by the state government with the KHADC and the Synjuk on December 14, last year, it was resolved that the MUDA shall be the authority to implement building byelaws only in municipal areas of the state.

He said that the meeting also decided that the KHADC should notify the Town Committees in the state and furnish the list to the Urban Affairs department.

“The department on receiving the list shall appoint the Town Committees as Local Authority under sub-section 1 under section 2 of the Meghalaya Town and Country Planning Act, 1973 for the purpose of implementing the Meghalaya Building Byelaws outside municipal areas,” Dohling said.

He further stated that the government would also file a petition before the Meghalaya High Court on the decision taken since the matter is also pending before the Court.

“The matter will soon be remdied in the interest of the beloved people,” the minister also assured.
