SHILLONG, MAR 20: Minister in-charge Public Works Department (Roads), Prestone Tynsong today assured that the Mawlai bypass will be completed at the earliest.
“I have already instructed the engineers to be sure the project is completed at the earliest,” Tynsong said while replying to a query raised by Congress legislator from Mawlai Process T Sawkmie in the Assembly on Tuesday.
According to him, the work is in progress and the physical progress is 60 per cent.
He informed that the administrative approval for construction of the Mawlai bye-pass from Mawlai-Mawtawar up to Mawlai-Mawiong at a cost of Rs 20 crore was received on March 31, 2012.
However, the work order was issued only on March 10, 2015, the minister said while pointing out that the delay was due to problem related to land acquisition for the project.
“The big issue was land. The Thangkhiew Clan does not want to part their land for the project and others from the same Clan also went to the Court. But as of today this hurdle has been resolved,” he added.
To a supplementary query raised by Congress legislator Zenith Sangma with regards to cost escalation due to the delay, Tynsong said there has been no revise estimate for the project since the contractors have agreed to take up the job with the same amount.
Of the Rs 20 crore, the minister also informed that Rs 11.84 crore was already paid to the contractors.
The time fixed to complete the project was within 24 months. However, the minister said there was no penalty imposed on the contractors since the government has already considered their request for extension of time.
Earlier, Sawkmie also urged the minister to conduct an inspection to the construction site to ensure speedy completion of the project, which would to a great extent ease the traffic jam in the city.
