Govt to spare no effort to shut down illegal coke plants: James

SHILLONG, JUL 1: Forest and Environment Minister James K Sangma on Thursday assured that the state government would act against illegal coke factories operating in the state.

“Let me be very clear on this that the government will not tolerate any kind of illegal activities and if there are such kinds of coke plants which are functioning illegally, we will spare no efforts to close them down,” Sangma told reporters.

He was reacting to the demand from several quarters for immediate shutting down of the illegal coke factories in West and East Jaintia Hills districts.

Earlier, BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek had written to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for his intervention into the alleged operation of over 32 coke factories in Jaintia Hills.

According to him, only five of thirty-seven have obtained proper licenses for operation while the rest are operating without valid licenses.
