Govt to utilize own land for developing games village: CM

SHILLONG, OCT 15: The high powered committee (HPC) chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma has decided to utilize government lands for the purpose of developing the games village and stadiums for the National Games-2022.

“We have identified the land. However, it will not be appropriate for me to tell (the location) but it is around Shillong and it is something where we don’t have to spend single paise,” Sangma told reporters after the meeting held here on Monday.

He said that this is one of ways and means to avoid spending additional money to buy land in view of the financial constrain faced by the state.

“So the high powered committee had discussed on how to take the proposal for the construction of the games village and game stadiums forward. We are trying to ensure that there is not much financial burden on the state,” the chief minister added.

Refusing to divulge further details on the meeting, Sangma, who was leaving for New Delhi said that all he could say is that the government have been able to make positive progress in this particular aspect.

However official sources informed that the government has already identified around 200 acres of land at the New Shillong Township.

Of this, land measuring 70 acres belongs to the Urban Affairs department while 50 acres and 40 acres of land is that of the Social Welfare department and Tourism department respectively.

According to the sources, the decision to implement the project on government land was also after a proposal from a dorbar shnong was received for giving away a plot of land at the cost of Rs 80 crore plus.

The meeting of the HPC was also attended by the Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh and officials of the different departments.

Meanwhile, chief minister informed that he would take up issues mainly with regards to roads during his visit to the national capital.
