Govt’s silence perturb ngos

SHILLONG, NOV 5: The pro 13 ngos slammed the Meghalaya government for keeping the recommendations of the three committees constituted to come up with effective mechanisms to check influx in cold storage.

“It seems that the state government is keeping the recommendations of these committees in cold storage in view of the fact that stipulated time fixed for them to complete their findings have already expired,” said Joe Marwein, president of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), one of the 13 NGOs in a statement  on Wednesday.

Earlier, the state government had constituted the three committees to come up with comprehensive mechanism to check influx which include the committee on entry and exit points, committee on tenancy and committee on Benami prohibition and detection.

“The stipulated two months time have passed and it is also known that these committees have completed their tasked of conducting research and recommendations to the state government, which however choose to be silent till today,” Marwein said.

The committees were also constituted following the demand of the 13 ngos for a comprehensive mechanism to regulate influx into the state after they dropped the demand for immediate implementation of the Inner Liner Permit (ILP) system.

“We therefore, would like to seek clarification, from the government on the actions taken by it on the recommendations made by these committees and also to place these recommendations in the public domain by inviting the stake holders to express their views and opinions on the same,” Marwein stated.

Marwein  further stated that the ngos also demand the government come clear on the implementation part on the recommendation of these committees.- By Our Reporter
