SHILLONG, NOV 5: Meghalaya chief election officer (CEO) Prashant Naik on Wednesday said that he would wait for the court’s verdict before any action is to be taken against Meghalaya social welfare minister Deborah Marak on the charge-sheet filed against her by the police for allegedly using GNLA to influence voters to vote for her during the last assembly election.
Naik, however, informed that the Election Commission had never received any complaints on politicians taking the help of militant outfits operating in Garo Hills during the last assembly elections. He told reporters on Wednesday, “I do not remember receiving any such complaints during election time.”
The CEO however said, “If at all anything had come that time, I would have immediately asked for an enquiry into the matter. As soon as somebody complaint against somebody whether it is violation of the model code of conduct or anything of that sort, we have to immediately enquire into.”
On being asked, Naik said, “Here, the case is that GNLA is a banned outfit and we have to see all the angles to it, but the offences part I will not comment. Had so and so taken their help it has to be proved.”
Naik, however, made it clear that now it is the police who will decide the offence and said if somebody complaints, it has to be prosecuted as per the law by the police not by me.- By Our Reporter
