GSU six points demand

SHILLONG, AUG 22: Garo Students’ Union (GSU) southern zone submitted a six point charter of demand to Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday listing its long pending demands for resolving the grievances faced by the people of the district. Improving the functioning of the Baghmara Civil Hospital in South Garo hills district was also part of the demand of the GSU.

“We demand that specialists should be immediately  posted so that emergency cases can be taken up in the hospital itself rather than being referred to Tura, Shillong or Guwahati.” GSU SZ president Solith P Marak said. Lack of medical supplies as well as  specialized equipments were also some of the problems which needs immediate attention of the government in the interest of the people especially those coming from poor economic  background.

The second demand pertains to quick upgradation of the tower lines within South Garo Hills district, as well as turning the MeCEL sub division into a fully fledged division to ensure there was minimal powercuts. The GSU also demanded that the  NH 62 repair work should be undertaken as the  road is deplorable condition.

Marak said, “We have been living like this for years and have waited for some improvements to come our way that would improve our living condition.  The NH is the biggest example of neglect within our district as people prefer to take the route through  Tura to Guwahati, whereas the NH62 was supposed to be a shortcut”.

Marak also pointed out that the Industrial Training Institute of Baghmara was supposed to provide livelihood management options to the people of the region but even after a decade of being set up, it only has wiremen training. It also does not have a full time principal or even a permanent address. It has been working out of a rented house and the courses offered are so limited that it has been struggling to meet the demand of the people of the area, he informed.

Marak also informed that the students’ body is demanding setting up of a taxation office within Baghmara as most people still have to go to Tura to pay their taxes and the last demand is the setting up of a district auditorium for the people to be able to hold activities with a much larger appeal.- By Our Reporter
