GSWSS’ funding source

SHILLONG, JAN 8: Meghalaya Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the department is also looking at other sources to ensure that the much awaited Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS)-Phase – III under the JNNURM is completed at the earliest.

The GSWSS which was however implemented by the PHE department is targeted to be completed on March this year.

“We are looking for other sources as well since a total amount of Rs 17 crores was deducted after the state failed to conform to the guidelines recommended by the Government of India,” Lyngdoh told reporters after reviewing the project.

According to her, the completion of the project is likely to be impacted due the cut imposed by the centre on the scheme. She said, “We have to impress upon the chief minister that it is something important and that the water supply scheme should see its logical end.”

According to her, even if funding from the centre may change or if the scheme may get new names or new forms which might make things take a little longer but the state government has to take certain important allocations.

“The state government has to find its own sources to complete these kinds of projects otherwise those pipes already laid will remain a waste,” the minister asserted.

Stating that GSWSS-III has a big plan with aim of resolving the water crises in the entire greater Shillong city, Lyngdoh said, “We hope it sees the light of day and we hope it becomes operational very shortly,” adding “You can’t keep on laying pipes all over the city and not having water running through them…it is wrong.”

“In fact with the completion of this water project and once water starts running through these pipes, every citizen of the city and all of us will be beneficiaries,” she said.

The main objective of the GSWSS phase III is to reduce the unaccounted wastage of water and to augment the water supply to areas covered under the Phase I and II of the GSWSS which also included Nongthymmai.- By Our Reporter
