SHILLONG, MAR 3: Inaugurating the four days Indian Panorama Film Festival on Monday at U Soso Tham auditorium, Meghalaya Governor KK Paul said films are the most powerful medium of expression and they can play a major role in cultural, psychological integration as well as promote tourism.

“While films can bring joy and make us laugh, they can also bring tears to our eyes. We in India are very emotional people, and our responses are also such. Bollywood brings out the best as they are aware that a film which can tingle our inner cords or even briefly touch our emotions, can be a sure shot winner,” Paul said.

Paul was of the opinion that the power of this medium lies in its psychological impact, charisma and the magnetic pull of the stars. He, however, added,  “But what we need is perhaps better scripts and better lyrics for the songs.”

Stating that till recently films were the cheapest source of entertainment and had a countrywide following in several languages, Paul said that now even though there are other avenues of entertainment, the appeal and relevance of cinema has not diminished one bit, and if anything, continues to grow.

Highlighting that North East is a multi shaded mosaic and the society is a complex reality with immense heterogeneity at most levels, Paul said, “Its interaction amongst itself is an important issue, and interaction with the rest of the country is another vital issue.”

According to Paul, the diversity amongst various sections and competing interests, can lead to conflict situations.  He said, “What we need is a total cultural integration and it is here that the role of films becomes very important.” He was of the opinion that what the north east really needs is a commercially successful NE based film with a pan Indian appeal.

Paul also said that there is no dearth of talent in the NE and films can play an integrative role by giving enhanced exposure to our talented boys and girls.

Stating that the entire Bollywood seems to get stuck in the tea gardens of Darjeeling by not realizing that if they moved further ahead, the pasteur would be more beautiful and even greener, Paul said, “We have waterfalls, clouds-natural, no need for dry ice, mountains landscapes, tea gardens, you have it all here. “

Lauding the efforts of the organizers, Paul said that the important aspect of the film festival is promotion of art and artists which sensitive and discerning viewers can appreciate quality cinema, which may not be popular on box office, but is a masterpiece of creativity.

Paul informed that at the IPFF, one not only gets an opportunity to watch classy cinema, this festival also motivate budding talent to come up besides festivals are also a rich source of learning.

Paul also released the souvenir of the Indian Panorama Film Festival during the function.

Earlier, celebrities like Dekh Indian Circus film’s actor and director Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mangesh Hadawale besides others were also introduced to the audience.

Dekh Indian Circus was screened as the opening film at the festival.
