SHILLONG, FEB 19: Meghalaya Governor, Tathagata Roy, in his maiden visit to East Garo Hills reviewed the scheme implementations by various Govt. line departments and interacted with the senior citizens at Williamnagar Circuit House on Tuesday.

Interacting with the Govt. officials and the members of Senior Citizens ’Welfare Forum, the Governor said that the future of Meghalaya lies in tourism and the utility of potentials need to be tapped accordingly. He also informed that the Simsang river in Garo Hills has the hydro-power project potential and suggested that the state should initiate steps for more power generation with the help of the agencies like NEEPCO. He also assured to pass on the information to the Govt.

Presenting the district profile, the Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, highlighted the poor learning and health indicator, shortage of officers and staff in Govt. departments, poor network coverage. etc. in the district.

While apprising the Governor of the prevailing situation in the district, Superintendent of Police, Ringrang TG Momin, informed that East Garo Hills by and large is peaceful and the crime rate also is comparatively low.

In the meeting, the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Forum, submitted a memorandum demanding construction of embankment along the Simsang river and during course of interaction, the members of the forum apprised the Governor of non-functional TB Hospital and the Williamnagar Polytechnic, incomplete Rongap bridge at Rongreng Baija, etc.

Vice Chairman of the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission, Gamchi Timre R Marak, highlighted the issues relating to women safety, working women’s hostel, etc. and informed that women issues are being sidelined in the district. She also informed that she had not been allotted with any vehicle to enable her to travel around in connection with the women issues.
