Guv wants CBI to probe CMJ Univ case

governor1SHILLONG, JUN 14: Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary wants that the investigation into the CMJ University affairs must now be transferred from the CID to the CBI. The suggestion was made a day after he had advised the state government to dissolve the institute which is embroiled in a controversy that led to its closure.

Mooshahary suggestion was made through a letter written by his principal secretary MS Rao suggesting transfer of the present investigation by the CID to CBI saying that if the state CID is finding it difficult in view of the extensive ramifications of the case it must be transferred to the central investigating agency.

Forty-five days have passed since the CID took up the investigation into the CMJ University, but the state investigating agency has not been able to make any breakthrough but only arrest four officials of the varsity while the kingpin the self appointed Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha is still missing.

Earlier, Mooshahary who is also the Visitor of the University had exposed  number of irregularities, mismanagement, mal-administration, indiscipline and criminal liability prevalent in the private university.

Besides suggesting for a CBI inquiry, Mooshahary also made other suggestions to the state government to implement against the varsity.

Mooshahary also suggested to the government to file a police complaint against the University for fraudulently withdrawing the endowment fund amounting to Rs 2 crore that was meant to finance a portion of the operating or capital requirements of the institution.

It was also revealed that Jha allegedly kept the money for two days so that he could get a bank statement and produce it before the fovernment as security money.

Concern over the plight of the students enrolled with CMJ University since its inception in 2010, Mooshahary also suggested that the state government must make the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University functional as early as possible so that the affected students could be given fresh options depending on their suitability.

Meanwhile, dissolution of the CMJ University will be final once the cabinet sits even as the State Regulatory Board for Higher Education has accepted the recommendations of Mooshahary.

Mooshahary on Wednesday had asked the state government to consider the closure of the University in accordance with Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009. –By Our Reporter
