HANM bats for referedum to solve boundary dispute with Assam

IMG_20190220_120731SHILLONG, FEB 20: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has supported the idea of referendum as one of the solutions to end the age-old boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.

The organisation has also threatened to intensify its agitations against the alleged delay of the state government to resolve this long pending issue during a sit-in-demonstration staged in the city here on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the protest, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani admitted that the call for referendum may be one of the solutions to solve the boundary dispute, which has created a lot of problem to the people residing at the border areas.

“It is better to allow the people residing at the border to decide at to which state they want to belong to if the two state governments are not serious to resolve the problem,” Kharbani said.

Stating that the protest is to pressurize the state government on the matter, he reminded that the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong during the election campaign for the 2018 Assembly polls had assured that the National People’s Party will take up the issue seriously.

“Therefore, we demand the NPP which is now ruling in the state to fulfil its promise,” he said.

Asked, Kharbani said that the government has assured to call the HANM for talks after the district council elections.

“If there is no positive outcome after the proposed meeting, we will be compelled to intensify our agitations,” he said.

He said the government is also suggested to urge the different himas to provide land documents for staking claims over the lands located at the disputed border areas.

Referring to the recent clash incident between the Assam police and villagers at Umwali village near Langpih, Kharbani said the organisation is also proposing to go to Langpih in order to protect the people and their land from the atrocities and illegal encroachment by the Assam government.
