HANM leader arrested

SHILLONG, DEC 3: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) West Khasi hills unit chief organizing secretary Liverpaul John K. Bani was arrested by the West Khasi hills police on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in torching three government offices in Nongstoin.

West Khasi hills district SP S Nongtnger informed that Liverpaul was arrested on Tuesday evening from his resident at New Nongstoin village.
He said police made the arrest after receiving information that Liverpaul was in residence.

Nongtnger said, “He is wanted in burning of three office in Nongstoin on the midnight of September 22 which includes torching of Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) office, the Meghalaya Khadi and
Village Industries Board and Fishery office at Nongstoin.”.

It may be mentioned that the police on September 26  had arrested Arful K. Bani, HANM president West Khasi Hills and charged him in three arson cases. Later Arful was booked under MPDA and was sent to Tura district jail.

And on October 3 police arrested HANM finance secretary and charged him in being involved in four arson cases.

HANM had agitated demanding removal of the West Khasi hills district deputy commissioner and had called for two-day office picketing on September 23 and 24. After police arrested the organization leaders, HANM had threatened to intensify its agitation but the government assured them that the MPDA under which its leader Arful was put will be removed and its finance secretary Gabriel Sohlang was released.- By Our Reporter
