SHILLONG, JUNE 14: The Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday asked the state authorities to take appropriate measures to ensure hygiene and degree of decency in the roadside meat shops.
Hearing a PIL filed by the Gau Gyan Foundation, the two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh said however, the rather revolting sight of skinned animals or parts of animals or chopped off heads staring from the roadside shops remains a reality.
“It is hoped that the State takes appropriate measures in such regard, both to ensure hygiene and a degree of decency,” it said.
The state in its affidavit has informed that several steps have been taken to ensure the ethical treatment of animals before they are culled.
The court said that the petitioners may file a rejoinder to the state’s affidavit within a fortnight from date.
The next hearing on the matter will be held on July 5.
