KHNAM reject Nongrum’s invitation

SHILLONG, JUNE 16: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Thursday rejected the invitation of its lone MLA from North Shillong Adelbert Nongrum to attend a meeting at his residence tomorrow.

This came after Nongrum had recently announced his decision to resign as the president of the KHNAM during the said meeting.

In a statement, KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said the party expressed surprise at the announcement made by the MLA that he would resign from the post of president when the Election Commission of India (ECI) has never recognized him as the president of the party.

“There is no truth in his (Nongrum) claim that there was a demand for him to resign as the president of KHNAM on March 25, this year. We had in fact discussed the need to correct the wrongs so that we can resolve the dispute. Therefore, as a party, we cannot accept his invitation made through the media,” he said.

“We also wanted to know how many times he will resign from the same party. He had resigned as working president and member of the CEC through his letter dated July 10, 2018. How is it possible for him to be elevated to the post of a president? And now he wants to resign again, what is trying to do?,” Saibon said.

Saibon also reminded Nongrum that the ECI has failed to treat Esron Marwein as candidate of the Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) from Mawryngkneng, but allowed him to contest as an Independent candidate in the bye-election held last year.

Further, Saibon maintained that their decision to reject Nongrum’s invitation doesn’t mean that the door for negotiation is closed.

“We will soon write to Nongrum to again meet to discuss resolving the issue in the interest of the party,” he said.
