HC directs state to provide adequate protection to injured social activists

SHILLONG, NOV 15: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state director general of police (DGP) to ensure security to social activist Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, who were admitted at the super-specialty hospital, NEIGRIHMS after the recent brutal attack.

In an order issued here on Thursday, the division bench comprises of the chief justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice SR Sen said, “Therefore the DGP shall take appropriate measures for ensuring protection/security of both the injured persons in NEIGRIHMS.”

This was after a petition was filed by Amita and others urging the Court’s intervention on the need for investigation by a specialized agency like the central bureau of investigation (CBI) into the incident.

The case has been registered but it is projected that the investigation of the case is not being carried out into its real spirit giving apprehension to the petitioners about hoodwinking of the case.

The petitioners also urged the court to direct the state for providing adequate security as they have the apprehension of being eliminated by the persons who had attacked them.

During the hearing, the ASG submit that the injured persons are admitted in NEIGRIHMS there is no scope for any person to cause any harm to them.

However, the bench maintained that may be true but keeping in view the magnitude of the attack and injuries suffered extra caution is required.

It has further directed the state government to bear the medical expenditures for both the victims after it was brought to the notice that they are not in a position to the bear the cost of medication and other facilities.

“…therefore, the cost of medical treatment shall be borne by the State of Meghalaya,” the bench said in its order.

The NEIGRIHMS as well as the State were also asked to ensure that all medical facilities as shall be required are made available to both the injured social activists who while espousing social cause were attacked by some coal mafia.

Meanwhile, the bench has also directed the investigating officer (IO) of the case to file the latest status of investigation so far carried out and to remain present in the Court along with case diary on the next date of hearing fixed on November 27.
