HC grants 2 weeks time to govt

SHILLONG, AUG 17: The Meghalaya High Court has granted two weeks time to the state government for filing response with regards to the custodial deaths in the state.

In its order issued here on Friday, the Court while taking suo-motu cognizance on the custodial violence and other matters relating to prison conditions has granted the senior government advocate two weeks time for filing response.

During the hearing, the Amicus Curiae has filed requisite affidavit highlighting therein custodial deaths (unnatural as well as purported natural deaths) during the period 2012 to 2016 as have taken place in the state of Meghalaya.

It has been pointed out that the next of kin of deceased persons who have died unnatural deaths in custody are required to be put on notice for grant of adequate compensation.

Similarly, the next of kin of persons who have died natural deaths in custody are also required to be put on notice for grant or otherwise of compensation.

Names of persons who have died unnatural or natural deaths have also been given in detailed in the affidavit.
