SHILLONG, JULY 9: A village headman and four VDP members were arrested by Ri Bhoi police for grievously assaulting a resident identified as Emmanuel Marak of Nongsdier village in Ri Bhoi district who succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday in the Shillong Civil hospital.

Marak was beaten up for allegedly supplying dendrite to minors in the area.  Marak, a father of two children, died in the Shillong Civil hospital on Wednesday.

The arrested are Brik Mukhim, who is the headman of Nongsdier village, Gesterfield Langstieh, John Nongrum, Iengskhem Shylla and Shemphang Lyngdoh.

Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy told this website ,“We have arrested the five accused including a headman of the village and four others who are members of Village Defence Party (VDP) for their involvedment in the assault case that led to the death of Emmanuel Marak,”

According Reddy, on June 19 the five accused had apprehended some minors who allegedly inhale dendrite and after giving them a sound thrashing the minors revealed that they had got the dendrite from Marak.

Reddy said, “Based on the allegation of the boys, the five led by the headman went to the house of Marak and started assaulting him badly that led to severe injuries.” Later he was admitted in the Shillong Civil Hospital.

When Marak was admitted in the hospital, his family had not filed an FIR with the police but instead had only told the doctor that the injury was sustained because Marak had fallen down in his house.

However, only on Tuesday an FIR was lodged by the deceased’s wife with the Umiam police station. Thereafter the police acted immediately.

Reddy said that the village authority had never brought the incident to the notice of the police. He said Marak was working as a cable operator in the area.

Reddy informed that five have been booked under sections relating to wrongful restrain and culpable homicide not amounting to murder case.- By Our Reporter
