SHILLONG, JULY 8: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) members on Tuesday resolved to put pressure on the state government to provide adequate security to the people residing along the inter-state border which are under dispute with neigbouring Assam.

The KHADC members also have decided to visit to all the border areas that falls under its jurisdiction which are affected due to militancy related activities from across the state

The decision was taken during an all party meeting convened by the KHADC chief executive member (CEM) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Tuesday.

Basaiawmoit told reporters after the meeting, “A delegation of all 29 MDCs irrespective of party affiliation will soon meet the state government to demand on the need to provide adequate security to the indigenous people residing along disputed border areas with Assam.”

Basaiawmoit said in the representation to be submitted to the government, KHADC  will put forth several demands which include the strengthening of the police force in the existing border police outposts and requirement of more police outpost up in the border areas.

“We would also serve a specific ultimatum to the state government to address the issue,” Basaiawmoit said even as he informed that the district council is already in the process of seeking appointment with the head of the state.

Basaiawmoit informed that the meeting also expressed grave concern over the various problems like atrocities and harassment committed by Assam government and militant groups against the indigenous people from time to time.

Asserting that the matter will not end only by submitting petition, Basaiawmoit said, “We will not hesitate to take up this issue with the centre if the state government is insensitive towards the safety and security of our people.”

KHADC opposition leader PN Syiem, also former CEM said, “The meeting of all the MDCs today is just a beginning towards our commitment to work, serve and live up to the expectation of the people on issues concerning the region.”

Basiawmoit is of the opinion that providing security to the people in the border is the equal responsibility of both the state governments – Meghalaya and Assam.

During the meeting, the MDCs also resolved to organize a visit to all the border areas in Khasi hills particularly those areas affected by militancy related activities.

The visit will be conducted within this month.

Basaiawmoit also informed that the KHADC will act as a facilitator to the state government’s initiative to resolve the long pending boundary dispute with Assam.  He said,“We are doing our bit to help the state government by submitting land documents available with the different Himas.” He also said that KHADC is encouraging individuals who have substantial proofs on such related issue to come forward with the documents to help the state government.- By Our Reporter

    The Syiems, Nokmas and Dollois should all prepare a detailed map of areas that fall within their jurisdiction.The Meghalaya Map from the Meghalaya Revenue Department and the Meghalaya Survey should be taken out from the shelves where some dubious officer/s have hidden and high time we regain our boundaries. We all know that those sitting in Governance now will not move and if the KHADC is serious they should first cancel the NOC for about 800 acres to this Meghalaya Infratech Pvt Ltd, at Khanapara, Meghalaya.Check why MUDA is interfering in land allotments and provide information to all with regards to the Raid Lands.
