HC notice on delay of KHADC bye-polls

SHILLONG, JULY 27: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday ordered issuing of notice to the state government with regards to the delay in holding of the bye-elections to the six seats under the KHADC.

The order came after a hearing on the PIL filed by one Cherubin Thongni against the state government.

In his petition, Thongni stated that six of the constituencies to Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) are unrepresented for last 10 months due to resignations by the members earlier elected from these constituencies and that the state government has not taken steps for holding of fresh elections to these constituencies.

The PIL said that these constituencies are being deprived of developmental schemes and projects since after the resignations of the elected members causing prejudice to the electorates/citizens apart from violation of their democratic right of representation in KHADC.

During the hearing, counsel appearing for the respondents prayed for granted of time to complete all their instructions which was accepted.

In its order, the High Court said, “In the meantime, let notice be also issued to the respondent No.4, returnable in three weeks.” It has also directed to list this matter for admission after three weeks.-By Our Reporter
