Shillong, November 7: Four members of a highway gang were arrested on Thursday by the police for their involvement in looting a coal truck driver and handyman at gun-point in Sohiong area under East Khasi hills district recently. All the four have been remanded to six days police custody.

East Khasi SP (city) Vivek Syiem told reporters on Thursday that the arrest was made after thorough investigation but the fifth member of the gang is still absconding.

The arrested persons are  Pynshai Rani (31) who has been identified as the mastermind of the crime, Halgis Lyngdoh (48), Rukmon Gurung (33) and Bankerlang Khardewsaw (22) who is a local taxi driver in the city.

Syiem informed that most of them including Rani were recently released on bail after they had been arrested for involvement in similar cases last year.

Rani was earlier arrested for involvement in six cases of robberies.

On November 3, the coal truck driver Dewansing Mawlong and handyman Kitboklang Mawlong were on their way from Shillong to Nongstoin for carrying coal. On reaching a viewpoint at Sohiong, a group of masked miscreants armed with knives and a gun accosted the two and looted money amounting to Rs 69, 320.

In November 22 last year, four members of the gang including Rani were arrested for looting trucks plying along the national highway of the district.

Syiem, however, informed that the gun used by the gang to loot was a plastic toy. The police have seized the toy gun and five stolen mobile phones.  A local taxi (ML 05 E 9966) used by the gang for the crime was also seized.

Syiem informed that the money that was looted from the truck could not be recovered as it was already distributed among the gang members which were already spent.

Syiem informed preliminary interrogation revealed that the gang was planning to rob more truckers plying along the national highway. The four have been booked under section 395 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (daicoity).– By Our Reporter
