HNLC says govt partial

SHILLONG, JAN 24:The  proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) accused the Mukul Sangma led MUA-II coalition government for adopting a different “policy” towards the outfit and its counterpart in Garo hills.

“The government of Meghalaya had given out their heart and soul to pave way for the A’chik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) and its breakaway faction ANVC-B with great pomp and show. When it comes to HNLC, things do not work out and ground rules changes with the ‘blink of an eye’,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Saturday.

Nongtraw statement came after the state government’s failed to appoint an interlocutor for facilitating the peace process with the HNLC.

How long will the GOM take time to appoint an interlocutor? One year, two years, five years or maybe never, Nongtraw said adding “We have lost faith in the government and its policies. It is for the people of the Hynñiewtrep to decide whether the HNLC or the government is at fault.”

According to Nongtraw, the HNLC had time and again reminded the Government of Meghalaya about the proposed peace process.

“Several communiqués were issued by the HNLC expressing willingness to come forward to the negotiating table. However, it is the state government that is playing the hide and seek game,” Nongtraw said.

Stating that chief minister Mukul Sangma had since August last year laid emphasis on calling militant groups to the negotiating table , thereby giving peace a chance, Npngtraw, however, said, “When the HNLC was willing to co operate then statements were issued that the state government would appoint an interlocutor for carrying forward the peace process. Subsequently, the chief minister then comes up with statements that only surrender is an option.”

“At this juncture the confusion is created by the government and not the HNLC,” Nongtraw added. He further accused that the aim of the government was always to overcome the HNLC and disarm it.

“This encompasses three broad objectives, which between them cover everything: destroying the HNLC’s armed forces; occupying its Hynñiewtrep land; and breaking its will to continue the struggle,” Nongtraw said.

The state government has only engaged in issuing statements in the press regarding peace talks but no concrete measures have been taken in terms of its implementation, Nongtraw said while suggesting to the state government that it ‘practice what it preaches’.

Meanwhile, the HNLC has also called for a 24-hour total shutdown from 6 pm of January 25 to 6pm of January 26, as a mark to boycott the Republic Day celebration.

Stating that the outfit will not disrupt any kind of religious ceremony, Nongtraw said, it is a co-incidence that Saraswati puja falls on the January 26, “ The state of Assam being a Hindu majority state will also witness Republic Day boycott including other NE states.

The HNLC came down heavily on the BJP led government at the centre for allegedly indulging in spreading hatred. “At last the government of India has started showing its true colours by spreading hatred and poison among different religious communities,” Nongrtaw said.

Nongtraw said the BJP government at the centre is using the Hindutva card to achieve its aims and objectives. He added, “The saffron brigade is hell bent to reduce the minorities and tribal into ashes. The Hindutva bomb has already been implanted and it’s only about time when it detonates and engulfs the religious minorities in its flames.”

The HNLC has also claimed that its cadres have already been able to sneak inside the state.

“Our fighters have entered the Hynñiewtrep soil even before the police department could think of,” Nongtraw claimed adding “They are being placed in their positions not to harm the public but the police department.”

Nongtraw appealled to the Syiems, Rangbah Shnongs, Dolloi, the general masses the ngos, pressure groups and the youth to observe the shutdown as a mark of protest against the step motherly attitude of the Government of India(GOI).

Medical attendants, hospitals , ambulance services, religious ceremonies , media houses shall be exempted from the purview of the shutdown, Nongtraw informed.- By Our Reporter
