SHILLONG:17 JULYTwo policemen guarding him have been arrested as the police suspects they had facilitated the escape .
Swer, an accused treated at the NEIGRIHMS escaped from his cell at around 8.30 am, Superintended of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said as as the accused was admitted in the hospital after he suffered from abdominal disease.
It is learnt that seven police personnel were deployed to guard the cell where the cadre was lying.
“Two arm branch constables Meytush Sangma and Sanborlang have been arrested in connection with the escape of the cadre,” Syiem said. He added, “It is highly suspected that they have facilitated the escape of Swer.”
The police department has also constituted an enquiry to probe into the matter.
“We are investigating into the incident leading to the escape of the accused,” the Syiem said.
Swer was earlier arrested by the Jaintia hills police f suspecting links with the HNLC and was later taken by Shillong Police for other cases registered against him.
It may also be mentioned here that 12 Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) under the leadership of Swer tried to escape from the Jowai District Jail in Jaintia hills way back in 2008 after killing a district jail guard identified as Lala Ray. However, the 12 UTPs were later re-arrested by district police. – By Our Reporter
