HNLC mouthpiece blocked

Shillong, August 3: The “Voice of Hynniewtrep” a page in the social network Facebook, which was used by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has been blocked.

The HNLC has been using this page as a medium to reach out to the people and inform them about their activities.

It was through this social network that the HNLC had revealed its involvement in the Lumdiengri police station firing and also in Jowai. It had also warned people that they will be striking during the eve of Independence day on August 14, which happened to be the twenty-five years since the HNLC was formed.

After this announcement was made police had immediately beefed up security at night to ensure peaceful Independence Day celebration.

East Khasi hills city SP H Kharkhrang, however, said that the district police didn’t block the mouth piece of the HNLC. He told Oh! Meghalaya on Friday, “ I really don’t know who blocked this particular social network page, but it was certainly not the district police.”

Police sources said that the page had been blocked on the direction of the union home ministry. The source said, “ The HNLC is a banned militant organization, so the union home ministry takes a call to ban such a page.” He, however, informed that the police headquarter also can blocked it.
