The bye-elections to Nongstoin seat was necessitated after its HSPDP president and stalwart Hopingstone Lyngdoh, who represented the constituency for nine record terms, died in September this year.

32- Nongstoin (ST) assembly constituency returning officer S Kharlyngdoh declared HSPDP’s Diosstarness Jyndiang, who hails from Mawthungkper village, elected. He informed that HSPDP Diosstarness Jyndiang polled total votes of 11,179, Congress’ Gabriel Wahlang polled 8,416, UDP Mosklandar Marngar polled only 1,257 votes and Independent candidate Dr. Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait polled 3128 votes and there were 189 NOTA votes.

The win of Diosstarness Jyndiang showed that the electorates of Nongstoin will not let go of the HSPDP party and wants to keep the memory of the party architect late Hopingstone Lyngdoh alive by voting for the candidate of the party he had formed.

An ecstatic Jyndiang promised that he will follow the legacy and footstep of the undisputed party leader late Hopingstone Lyngdoh and continue to fight for the border issue and any other issues affecting the Khasi Jaintia community and will continue to fight for a Khasi Jaintia state.

HSPDP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that the win of the party in bye election is the precursor that the party will come into power in the next state assembly elections in 2018.
