SHILLONG, APR 6: Former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC )chairman Manstudy Nongrem on Wednesday alleged that the two gates, which have been set up by the district council for checking challan issued to trucks, in his constituency are “illegal”.

The (KHADC) recently set up two gates at Ranikor and Borsora, which has irked for alleged illegal collection instead of checking challans.

Questions have also been raised as to how KHADC is checking when the challans are being issued by the state government.

As the people of the area were not aware that the gates were set up by KHADC’s  PDF led executive committee they presumed it was the work of the local representative (Nongrem).

Nongrem, who is also presently KHADC chairman, had taken up the issue of removing these gates with KHADC CEM PN Syiem and executive member (EM) L Blah.

“I have requested them to recall their decision as setting up of the gates is illegal and is affecting the people,” Nongrem told reporters on Wednesday. He however lamented that the executive committee is yet remove these gates.

According to Nongrem, complaints have been received from people against the illegal collection by these gates of Rs 100 and Rs 200 per truck. He said, “Not only people tends to think that the collection was being carried by me but this has also affected me as a public representative of the area.”

Earlier Nongrem met the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District on the issue and informed that the DC assured that an inquiry would immediately be taken up before issuing necessary order on the issue.-By Our Reporter
