Shillong, November 25: The opposition under the umbrella of the Meghalaya People’s Forum (MPF) sought Meghalaya governor KK Paul’s intervention to end the two months deadlock between the state government and the pro-Inner Line Permit ngos over the implementation of the ILP in the state.

The MPF also felt that Paul must also intervene in the insurgency issue affecting the Garo hills districts of the state.

“The situation warrants your immediate intervention as a need of a meaningful and structured dialogue cannot be overemphasized and the imperative of your stepping in becomes unavoidable,” the MPF led by its chairman Donkupar Roy said in a memorandum submitted to the Paul during meeting on Monday.

Stating that situation in the Khasi – Jaintia Hills sector is bad, the MPF memorandum  said that the entire state has been experiencing a series of shutdowns, night road blockades and picketing of offices since September 2, after the breakdown of talks between the government and agitating groups on the ILP issue.

“All this has led to an enormous and irrecoverable financial loss to the state and more importantly the loss of two innocent lives,” the MPF leaders also told Paul.

According to the MPF leaders there seems to be no breakthrough in the impasse because of the indifferent attitude of the state government.

“It is the public that is caught in the crossfire and there is a palpable feeling of frustration and anger amongst not just the youth but even government employees tasked with handling the law and order situation in the state,” MPF leaders asserted.

On the insurgency – related issues in Garo hills region, the MPF further maintained the need to thoroughly probe the unholy nexus between members of the ruling group and the insurgents.

“It is an admitted fact that the morale of the police force has been badly eroded by this nexus making their tasks of policing a herculean one,” the MPF leaders said in the memorandum.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Paul, MPF secretary James K Sangma said, “The situation in Garo hills warrants an immediate intervention to stop this spiraling law and order situation from going down which is taking place due to ineffectiveness of the state government in handling the law and order situation.”

Sangma said that there are so many splinter groups that are coming out every day as one gets to hear formation of new insurgent outfit besides demand notes being served to general public and even government employees.

Castigating the failure of the state government in handling the situation in Khasi – Jaintia Hills and tackling insurgency in Garo Hills, the MPF leaders said, “We genuinely fear that this situation has the potential to spiral out of control leading to a total breakdown of law and order.” The memorandum surmised the MPF approach to Paul saying, “It is with this apprehension that we urge upon you to kindly intervene in an effort to bring back normalcy in our once beautiful and peaceful state.”- By Our Reporter
