SHILLONG, MAR 14: Meghalaya plan size for the 2013-14 financial year that has been agreed is Rs 3, 939 crores, which is an increase of forty-four percent over the preceding years, Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary informed the state assembly on the first day of the budget session on Thursday even as he said under the 12th Five Year Plan starting from 1st April 2012, the State has projected a Plan size of Rs. 27,027 crores to the Planning Commission.
On the energy front, Mooshahary said the state’s power generation capacity has been augmented with the commissioning of all the three units of the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Project.
Saying that the availability of power is essential for the development and progress of the state, Mooshahary said, “Work is also currently underway on the New Umtru Hydro Electric Project which is expected to be completed by March next year.”
Mooshahary also informed that with the completion of the substation at Byrnihat, the state will now be able to draw its share of power from the Palatana Gas Station in Tripura.
Under the transmission segment, Mooshahary said, “The 132 KV transmission line from Nangalbibra to Agia (Assam) is expected to be completed soon which will substantially improve the power situation in Garo hills region.”
Informing that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd has also taken up schemes to improve and augment the distribution network, Mooshahary said, “The state has successfully implemented the Reforms programme in the distribution sector under the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (APDRP), and is now taking up the second phase of reforms under the Restructured APDRP.”
“Preparation of feasibility studies and DPRs of small hydro projects in the state will be given more emphasis,” Mooshahary said adding “These will help establish viability of such projects and once these are implemented they will produce additional power for the State which in turn will help provide cheaper power.”
Under the Renewable Energy Programme, Mooshahary informed the main thrust of the 12th Five Year Plan is to intensify the programmes and restructure the scheme on the basis of end users’ application of technologies, with focus on Off – Grid and Thermal Application. –By Our Reporter
