SHILLONG, APR 5: The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into Thursday’s incident that has left three persons injured and dozens of shops vandalized when the KSU rally passed through Laitumkhrah main road even as a magistrate has filed an FIR with the police against “unknown persons” for the act of vandalism.

On Thursday evening, three persons that include two tourists and a pan seller were injured when they were attacked at a time when the KSU rally to mark its thirty-five anniversary passed through Laitumkhrah main road. Around dozen shops along the road were also vandalized.

East Khasi hills district additional deputy commissioner DM Wahlang will head the inquiry and he is expected to submit the inquiry report within a week.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal told reporters on Friday, “A magisterial inquiry to probe into the entire incident has been ordered today.”

Meanwhile the tourists identified as  Briten Sinha and Arup Kundu besides the pan seller  Sushil Mishra are recuperating at a private city hospital, police informed.

A review meeting was also held by Goyal with the magistrates and police officers wherein it was pointed out that the vandalism took place because the KSU had broken rules by diverting the routes of the rally for which permission was given by the district administration.

Goyal said, “They (organization) have not followed the procedure of the permission granted to them by diverting the routes which were properly demarcated and even the timing of the rally was set.”

Goyal informed that the district administration had deputed eight magistrates including two ADMs in different places along the route to ensure law and order situation was maintained.

Reacting to the criticism as to why the district administration had given permission for the rally during night time, Goyal said that the permission was granted after proper analysis based on the fact that the programme was for traditional drum beat to commemorate the Khasi Awakening Day.

Goyal said, “On such a solemn occasion to resort to such thing is quite unexpected,” and added “This should not have happened and the organization has to take responsibility.”

Goyal also informed that the police are assessing the situation and will take action accordingly.

Meanwhile, reacting on the incident KSU president Daniel Khyriem denied that the KSU members were involvement in the Thursday’s vandalism.- By Our Reporter
