SHILLONG, JULY 15: Over 1,800 employees of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) have decided to resort to an indefinite strike from Thursday, as a mark of protest against the Council’s failure to release their salary for the past many months.
The decision was taken by the employees under the banner of the JHADC Staff Association on Wednesday.
“We have decided to go for an indefinite strike from tomorrow till the JHADC authority releases our pending salary for more than seven months,” JHADC-SA president Johnson Pohrmen told reporters.
He said that the executive committee led by Thombor Shiwat has decided to release only one month’s salary today after coming to know about the decision of the employees.
“However, we have decided to reject any invitation by the executive committee for discussion on this issue as we do not want to fall for their false promises again and again,” Pohrmen said.
The president also reminded that the JHADC chief Thombor Shiwat had assured to step down from the post if he failed to clear the pending salary of the employees. “We feel that he should keep his word by stepping down immediately,” he said.
Earlier, the employees had staged a similar protest in April this year. However, the protest was called off based on the assurances given by the executive committee.
The salary expenditure incurred by the JHADC is Rs 7 crore per month.
