Shillong, Dec 6: The West Jaintia hills district election department has been asked to cancel the application of five doubtful non-indigenous people for enrolling in the electoral roll by the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) Thursday.

The JSU has claimed to have detected the  issuing of illegal residential certificates to five non-tribals by the headman of Khliehtyrshi (Mookyniang) village so that they would be able to apply for EPIC cards.

A delegation of the JSU immediately brought the matter to the notice of the EAC of election department and demanded necessary actions.

“We demanded to the district authority to take immediate action by cancelling their applications for enrolling in the electoral roll,” JSU president Rikut N Parien told reporters.

The five non-indigenous people who were issued with the illegal residential certificates include Raij Kumar Bishwa Kurma, Krishna Bishwa, Sudib Chandra Shill, Arati Sunar and Durka Kumar.

“We suspected that there is another non-tribal who is intending to enter the electoral roll from Chutwakhu locality of Jowai town but we are yet to find out whether he has got any residential certificate or not,” Parien said. He informed that the problem of rampant issuing of residential certificate to non-genuine citizens is of great concerned and poses serious threat to the district.

“We warned all the concerned headmen of the district to refrain from such unacceptable activity which is a crime to the indigenous tribes,” Parien added. – By Our Reporter
