Guv: Education can curtail human right violation

Shillong, Dec 7: Even as Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary said that “women”, “children” and “senior citizens” are more susceptible to human rights violation, he was of a strong opinion that “education” can be an effective tool to ensure that such violation is curtailed in society.

Addressing the International Conference on Human Rights on the theme “Human Rights a global challenge” held at the Lady Keane College Friday, Mooshahary said,  “We need special arrangement to protect their rights which is possible only through education.”

Without education, Mooshahary opined, it is useless in bringing so many legislations to promote and protect human rights. He implored, “I advise society to educate women as an enlightened and educated women is a source of power.”

Mooshahary also laid stressed on the need for inculcation moral and spiritual values, which according to him are the types of education which is needed to be imparted to people as it teaches how to “unlearnt-evils.” He said, “Education should also create conditions for human rights to flourish.”

According to Mooshahary, poverty, illiteracy and superstition are enemies of human rights.”  “Awareness is needed to promote human rights,” he added.

Touching upon emerging rights, Mooshahary named “Green brigades” that demands rights to clean environment and “Right To Information (RTI)” as the other modern days right.

Speaking about the controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), Mooshahary said it has been abused by arms forces especially in the north east depriving the region of the human rights which he felt is the main reason as to why people are demanding its repeal.

Mooshahary also spoke about the need to re-look at the Information Technology Act 2000 in view of the recent arrest of two girls in Mumbai for posting their comments on face-book a social networking site.

Former Rajya Sabha member Bharatiya Ray, who was also present, said that trafficking and domestic violence are the main problems faced in the north eastern region.”  She, however, felt to overcome such problem; there is a need to be tackled it by educating from boyhood to adulthood from the school level on human rights. – By Our Reporter
