JSU deadline adds to government woe

jsuSHILLONG, MAY 7: It appears to be a deadline galore for the Meghalaya government as the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has served thirty-day deadline to the government as well as the seven legislators from Jaintia hills to meet their demand for up-gradation of the Jowai Civil Hospital, setting up of blood bank and making the Ialong Civil hospital functional.

Close on the heels of the expiry of the KSU deadline which has led the union to announce two days  road night blockade on May 10 and May11 in East Khasi hill district, the JSU also has threaten to launch a series of agaitation in Jaintia hills if their demands are not met within the stipulated time.

The JSU demands were submitted to chief Minister Mukul Sangma as well as the seven legislators.

JSU president Rikut N Parien told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday, “We demand that the government and the MLAs from the region to should fulfill the demands put forth by the union within the stipulated time.”

Parien warned that if the union demands are not met then it will be forced to announce series of agitational programmes to put pressure on the government to fulfill what are issues that concerns the welfare of the people of the district.

JSU said in the past several memorandums were submitted to the government on the same issue since 2002 but were all ignored.

The JSU had demanded the upgradation of Jowai Civil Hospital to a state hospital to cater to the medical needs of the growing population from urban and rural areas.  The JSU president said “At present, due to lack of medicines, staffs and qualified specialized doctors, poor people are forced to take treatment from private clinics and hospitals in Jowai and Shillong which are expensive.

Speaking about the non-functional blood bank despite having proper infrastructures in place, Parien said, “Many lives have been lost due to the fact that there is no blood bank in the Civil Hospital.”

Parien also wondered as to why the Ialong Civil Hospital has been nonfunctional for many years even as he stressed their demand to immediately utilize the hospital so that the existing civil hospital at Jowai which is already congested can be upgraded and reconstructed to a state level hospital.- By Our Reporter
