JSM warns pvt schools

SHILLONG, JAN 25: The Jaintia Student’s Movement (JSM) central body has warned private run institutions set up across the two districts of Jaintia hills from commercializing education, which it said is against the interest of students.

“The authorities of private schools are warned and urged to refrain from any attempts to commercialize education,” JSM publicity secretary Deijuhhi Siangshai said in a statement i on Monday. According to him, selling of textbooks, uniforms and other requirements should be reasonable to students.

The statement came just ahead of the new academic session where admission, renewal are going on in the different educational institutions.

Siangshai also said, “If any schools are found charging students books, uniforms, and fees at an exorbitant rate, we would take up the matter against the schools as per the provision of Right To Education (RTE) Act.”

Stating that the school is not a place to do business, he said that the authorities concerned are to be reminded that they should not forget the objective of a school, which is shape the future of the students.

Acknowledging the initiative of individuals to set up of schools with good reputation, Suchiang however said but they should also keep in mind the interest of students especially those coming from poor economic background.

Meanwhile, the JSM also sought the cooperation of all private schools towards the common goal which is to ensure all students gets equal rights and accessible to quality education.-By Our Reporter
