Shillong, December 13: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) released the first list containing the  name of five of its candidates  who will be contesting in the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) election. The party has decided not to contest for the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) election.

While releasing the first list for the KHADC election on Friday, KHNAM president Pyndapbor Saibon said, “We have decided to put up candidates for MDC polls only for KHADC and we are confident of winning from all the constituencies.”

Saibon said the first list contains only five names and the party announced the second list by January next year. The first list contains the names of four sitting MDCs of the KHADC and a new comer who joined the party recently.

The first list includes the name of Adelbert Nongrum from Jaiaw, James Ban Basaiawmoit from Mawkhar, Latiplang Kharkongor from Nongthymmai, Carmel Sohtun from Laitkroh and Elphrin Lawai from Sohryngkham constituency.

Saibon said so far there are over fourteen aspirants who have applied for the party ticket. He however said that the list of aspirants will first have to be placed before the party’s election committee for scrutiny and the selection process will be based on the “winnability” factor of the candidates and also the issues that the aspirants are interested raise during the election must be in sync with the party’s ideology.”

Saibon, however, said the party will not put up candidates in all constituencies.  He informed that the party has proposed to include another 7-8 constituencies in the second list and one of it will be for Mawlai constituency.

Answering a query , Saibon said, “We are sure that the party will form a non-Congress coalition led executive committee at the KHADC this time as our main agenda to contest the election is to fight against the Congress party.”

Referring to just concluding elections in five states of the country, Saibon said, “Am sure that people of the state will vote against the Congress party in Meghalaya especially because of the adamant attitude of the Mukul led state government to the demanded for “Inner Line Permit (ILP)”.”

KHNAM is one among the non-Congress political parties who have supported the 13 pro ILP ngos  in their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to contain unabated illegal influx into the state.- By Our Reporter
