SHILLONG, NOV 29: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) candidates on Tuesday pledged allegiance to the party ahead of the bye-elections to the KHADC.

The pledge was administered by the KHNAM chief Pyndapbor Saibon in front of the U Tirot Singh monument at the State Central Library.

The candidates include Bankhraw Singh Kharbuli from Laban-Mawprem, Edarstar Lyngdoh Nongbri from Nongkrem and Pyndapborlang Lyngdoh Marshyllong from Pariong-Mawthadraishan.

Also present on the occasion were former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum, party general secretary Batkupar Wahlang besides functionaries and supporters.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Saibon said that the pledge of allegiance is to ensure that if the candidates wins the election are prevented from shifting their allegiance to other parties.

“This is because there is no anti defection law in the district council and it is necessary to prevent such event which is the root cause of instability,”  he said.

He said  the pledge is a symbolic belief that conscience is the most powerful than any law.

Saibon said that the former KHNAM MDC from Nongthymmai Latiplang Kharkongor never took any pledge when the ceremony was first started in 2014.

However he refused to comment on the resignation of Mawlai MDC PT Sawkmie from the party to join the Congress.  “Though he was part of that pledging ceremony we do not want to make any comment as it was his personal decision, “he added.

Out of 4 MDCs who won the last election in 2014, Sawkmie and Kharkongor resigned from the party last year.
