SHILLONG, FEB 4: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) will soon write to all non Congress political parties to enter into a post-poll-alliance to defeat the Congress from forming the next executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). Elections to KHADC is slated on February 24.
“We will soon submit a written appeal to all the regional parties in the state like the United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) and others on the need to merged for a post-poll-alliance to ensure the Congress party is defeated in the forthcoming district council elections in the state,” KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon told reporters after the party’s meeting on Tuesday.
According to Saibon, KHNAM believes that the Congress will be defeated if all regional parties are willing to work together. The party is also confident that KHNAM will be 100 percent victorious in KHADC election.
KHNAM has so far declared as many as 13 candidates including two women from Khasi hills though it has not decided to field any candidates for the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) election.
Saibon will contest from Shella constituency. He said, “We are confident to get a 100 per cent victory in this election.” He also informed that the party will soon announced its final list of candidates.
Highlighting on the proposed election manifesto of KHNAM which will be release next week, Saibon informed demands such as the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check illegal influx into the state, resolving the age-old boundary dispute with neigbouring Assam, seeking deletion of para 12 (a) of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, preservation of customary laws and practices and empowerment of traditional bodies are some of the core issues that will figure in the party’s manifesto.
Saibon also informed that the party would also seek the urgent need to implement the Anti-Defection Law in the District Council to curb down and restrict the possibility of members from switching from one political party to another.
On the recent peace-pact between the A’chik National Volunteers’ Council (ANVC) with centre and state government, Saibon said, “We would also demand the need to increase the strength of our district councils to another 50-55 seats keeping in mind that our population is much higher than that of GHADC.” He also welcome the peace-pact agreement but said that the state government must also apply the same yardstick to KHADC and JHADC.
Saibon also said that the issues that the party would like to focus in its manifesto is curbing down on the rampant issuing of trading licenses to non-tribal, direct funding from the centre and protecting the mineral resources.-By Our Reporter
