KSU announce 2-day night road blockade

DSC_0014SHILLONG, MAY 6: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) announced  two-days  ‘night road blockade’ beginning from 9 pm to 5 am on May 10 and May 11 as the government failed to release two of its members who had been arrested on charge that they were involved in the vandalism on April 4 during the KSU procession. The road blockade on the two nights will however be operational only in East Khasi hills district.

KSU vice president Fedrick Kharmawphlang told reporters after the  meeting of the union on Monday evening that the  decision was taken as the twenty-four hours deadline given to the state government to release its Mawlai unit general secretary Johnny Lyngdoh and Demseiniong unit member Teilang Nongbri had expired.

Kharmawphlang said, “We are forced by the government to take this step.” He informed the union would sit again if the government fails to release their members and accordingly would decide what to do next.

Earlier during the day KSU president Daniel Khyriem had said that the union had been cooperating with the government and its members had gone to the Mawlai police station to record the statement on the April 4 incident.

Khyriem said, “We have appeared before the police station to ensure that there is no misunderstanding between the union and the government. The union has extended full cooperation to the government with regards to the incident,” he said, while expressing concern over the arrest of the members who, he claimed, were not even present during the incident.

Khyriem asked as to how the government could arrest people when the incident was still being inquired into. “You (the government) sought our cooperation, and when the inquiry report is yet to be submitted, you start picking up members for no reasons…We demand the government to stop all these action against the members before things go out of hand,” he said.

The KSU president said his union does not want to resort to any agitation programme on the issue. However, such unjustified action, he said, will not deter the union from fighting for the cause of the people of the state.- By Our Reporter
