SHILLONG, JAN 6: The KSU Friday said it strongly oppose the recent tender floated by the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) for exploration and research for uranium drilling activities in South West Khasi hills district. “We opposed the sealed tender floated by AMDER on December 27, 2016 for carrying out uranium drilling activities in Nongjri,” Khasi Students Union (KSU) South West Khasi hills president Forwardman Nongrem said.

He said, “As the union stick to its stand against any attempt to mine uranium in the state, it will also oppose this move of the AMD, which is seen as an attempt to bulldoze the people’s wish.”

Recalling the unanimous decision taken at a public meeting held in July last year, Nongrem warned, “This decision will also apply to the AMDER if it dares to go ahead with its move.”

He lambasted the department for floating the tender despite knowing fully well that the people of district will not accept uranium mining.

He warned that the union also made its stand clear that it will not sit but fight against your attempt to disrupt peace and tranquillity in the state.
