SHILLONG, APR 16: Meghalaya excise minister Zenith Sangma admitted that he has no information on the legal age for consumption of alcohol in Meghalaya on Tuesday during the ongoing assembly session. He said, “I have no information on the legal age but the provision of law will be enforced.”

Earlier moving the cut motion NPP legislator James K Sangma said that, the legal age of drinking in the state is being flouted with liquor shops and bars selling alcohol to minors without verifying their age.

The legal drinking age in Meghalaya is 25 years.

The minister, however, assured that his department was taking adequate measures to ensure that liquor shops are not set up in the vicinity of educational institutions or places of worship as required by the rule.

“This rule will be amended to provide for specific distance within which no liquor licence will be issued,” the minister said. He also said that measures to curb the menace of illicit distilled liquor are being undertaken.- By Our Reporter
