Literacy Day observed

SHILLONG, SEPT 8: Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo, who is in charge of education, said that achieving 100 percent literacy rate in Meghalaya will not be impossible as the state had already achieved 74.43 percent literacy rate in 2011.

Addressing the World Literacy Day on the theme, “Making Education A Reality” at St. Paul Higher Secondary School, Marbisu on Monday as the chief guest and PK Srivastava, principal secretary of education as guest of honour, Laloo said the main objective of the programme is to mobilize ‘out of schools children’ to attend schools and to also make parents and the community conscious of the importance of education.

“Unless out of schools children are brought back to school, we will not be able to give a literacy mandate”, Laloo said in the programme organized by the Office of the State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SEMAM).

Saying that in 2011 the literacy rate in Meghalaya was 74.43%, so it will not be impossible to achieve 100% literacy rate by 2014, Lalool stated that education is a continuous process and that the sole responsibility of education lies with the teacher.

Stressing the need of trained teachers to make teaching more effective, Laloo also informed that three Blocks Institute of Teachers in Education will be opened soon where teachers will be given Rs. 5000 per month as stipend.

Laloo urged upon  each and every household ,locality  and  other  high  officials  to  work   together  in  order  to  achieve  the  desired  target and  that  one  day  Meghalaya  will  be  declared as  a  100% literate  state.

Meghalaya principal secretary (education) PK Srivastava said,“You cannot enjoy freedom unless you are a literate.” He underlined the need for enrolment of children in formal schools and the importance of learning and appealed to the teaching community to take teaching not as a means  of  livelihood and profession but as a responsibility to ensure that children who comes to schools do not drop out and to bring back the drop outs to schools so as to promote education in the state.

A cultural programmes and distribution of awards and recognition to the best Cluster Resource Centres and Educational Volunteers were the other highlight of the day.

Earlier FR Kharkongor, Secretary of education department and State Project Director SEMAM, delivered the welcome address while P Lyngdoh, District Mission Coordinator, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), East Khasi Hills offered the vote  of thanks.- By Our Reporter
