SHILLONG, NOV 8: Meghalaya deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 0.410 km PWD road at lower Lumparing, a fulfillment to the 30 year-long aspirations of the people of the area.

In a first of its kind occasion, the road has been proposed to be name after area’s own legislator and Member of District Council (MDC) Sanbor Shullai or SS Road by the village durbars of the area as a mark of gratitude to him.

“The road will be constructed from Jackson Trace road via Muslim and Seng Khasi graveyards up to Upper Lumparing existing road at an estimated cost of Rs 3.7 crore,” PWD (Road) chief engineer L Passah said while speaking at the function.

Passah said, “We have completed the process of floating the tenders and soon will be issuing the work order so that the construction of the road can be started immediately by December this year.”

Passah informed that though the targeted time has been fixed for two years, the PWD will however try its best to complete the construction of the road before the stipulated time and sought cooperation from all quarters.

In their speeches, headmen from Lower and Upper Lumparing said that the road has been a long pending demand of the people which fructified with the concerted efforts put in by the current legislator, Sanbor Shullai.

“We suggest that the road be name after him (Sanbor Shulla) and it should be called as the SS Road,” the headmen said adding, that the road will be a great blessing for the residents of the area and also visitors to the area.

According to the headmen, usually people have to take the long route to reach Lumparing, which is located at the corner most of the capital from the main city roads.

Interestingly, the project could be implemented after the Seng Khasi Raij Laban and Muslim Kabristan Committee decided to part away with portion of their graveyards to facilitate the construction of the road in the interest of the people of the area.

Speaking during the function, Shullai expressed his gratefulness to the Seng Khasi Raij Laban and Muslim Kabristan Committee for parting away their lands free of cost to pave way for the implementation of the project.

Shullai said, “I know it is not an easy task to part away such lands but let this be an example that people in our area believes in a secular mission and we live in peace and communal harmony.”.

Shullai informed that the issue was raised by him during the assembly session held last year where chief minister Mukul Sangma himself has assured on the floor of the house that within the current year he would send recommendation that the road should get the sanction.

Shullai also said that the land has been registered as per the PWD criteria and hope that the road will benefit the people of the area greatly. – By Our Reporter
